नागेश्वर · The Lord of Serpents

The tenth of the twelve Jyotirlingas

Presiding deities: Lord Shiva as Nageshwar — the Lord of Serpents — as a Swayambhu (self-manifested) Linga in an underground sanctum, with Goddess Parvati as Nageshwari.

ॐ नमः शिवाय नागेश्वराय

Nageshwar is revered as the tenth Jyotirlinga. According to the Shiva Purana, a devout Shiva bhakta named Supriya was imprisoned by the demon Daruka and his wife Daruki in their underwater city. Supriya kept chanting “Om Namah Shivaya” and inspired his fellow prisoners to worship Shiva. Pleased by this unwavering devotion, Lord Shiva appeared, destroyed the demons, and established himself here as Nageshwar — and the temple’s underground sanctum symbolises that legend. The name means “Lord of Serpents”, and devotees believe darshan here brings relief from sarpa dosha, Rahu–Ketu afflictions and the Kaal Sarp yoga. Because the shrine sits near Krishna’s Dwarka, most pilgrims pair it with Dwarkadhish darshan — the Shiva–Krishna twin yatra of Saurashtra.

History & heritage

An ancient shrine, a modern landmark

The Nageshwar shrine is of ancient origin, named in the traditional dwadasha-jyotirlinga stotra recited daily by devotees across India. While its historical patronage is less documented than that of the larger Jyotirlingas, the temple has been sustained for centuries through local devotion and trust management on the Saurashtra coast, close to the Krishna pilgrimage circuit of Dwarka.

The temple’s most recognisable feature is the colossal 82-foot (25 m) statue of Lord Shiva in Dhyan Mudra (meditation posture), set in the open-air garden surrounding the shrine and visible from a considerable distance. Built with modern materials and funded by devotee donations during major renovations in the 2000s, it has become the symbol of Nageshwar. The shrine is maintained by a private temple trust in coordination with the Devbhumi Dwarka district administration.

Frequently asked questions

What are the Nageshwar darshan timings?
The Mangala Aarti is at 5:00 AM, morning darshan runs 6:00 AM to 12:30 PM, evening darshan from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM, and the temple closes at 9:00 PM. Timings shift on Mahashivratri, Shravan Mondays and Nag Panchami when crowds are large — message us for the latest schedule for your dates.
Where is Nageshwar Jyotirlinga and how do I reach it?
Nageshwar is in the Devbhumi Dwarka district of Gujarat, about 17 km from Dwarka town between Gomti Dwarka and Bet Dwarka. The nearest railway is Dwarka (17 km), and the nearest airports are Porbandar (93 km), Jamnagar (137 km) and Rajkot (217 km). We arrange trains, flights and door-to-door transfers, usually combined with Dwarka.
Is Nageshwar good for Kaal Sarp and Nag Dosh puja?
Yes. As the “Lord of Serpents”, Nageshwar holds special significance for sarpa dosha, Rahu–Ketu afflictions and Kaal Sarp yoga, and Nag Panchami (Jul/Aug) is especially auspicious. We can arrange a pandit-led sankalp and puja during your darshan — message us with your details.
Can I visit Nageshwar and Dwarka together?
Absolutely — most pilgrims do the Shiva–Krishna twin yatra of Saurashtra, combining Nageshwar with Dwarkadhish Temple (17 km), Bet Dwarka, Gomti Ghat and the Rukmini Devi Temple. Somnath, the first Jyotirlinga, is 233 km away and can be added as a longer Gujarat circuit. We plan the itinerary and transfers for you.
